John Alder

Sculptor

John is an artist who’s work eludes categorisation – the best attempt being made by the art critic Richard Cork who declared him to be a ‘hybrid symbolist’.

Since leaving the Royal College of Art, John has been involved in projects ranging from interior design at the Crest Hotel chain to conservation at Tewksbury Abbey and architecture at Clifton Cathedral in Bristol.

John is a regular exhibitor at the Royal West of England Academy and at the Atkinson Gallery at Millfield School. He has taken part in shows at the Whitechapel Gallery – London, Trinity College – Cambridge, Studio International – Bristol, Phillips Gallery – Taunton, with the Recessionists at various venues and has sold work at the Royal Academy Summer Show. Work in collections, apart from private portraiture, includes those of the late Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones and the Smithsonian Institution in the USA.

John’s work is not conceptual but concept driven, making it necessary for him to apply his many skills  to work in a variety of media including bronze, silver, resin, acrylics, pencil and photography. He currently lives and works in Somerset.
